National Punctuation Day

Punctuation saves lives - celebrate #NationalPunctuationDay

A close look at the sentences “Let’s eat, Grandma!” and “Let’s eat Grandma!” reveals that punctuation saves lives!

National Punctuation Day is celebrated annually on 24 September and all punctuation marks are commemorated on this day.

Examples of punctuation marks used in sentences to separate their elements and clarify meaning include the period (or full stop), exclamation mark, question mark, comma and semicolon.

National Punctuation Day is an unofficial national holiday that was founded by Jeff Rubin in 2004 to promote the correct use of punctuation. It is recognised globally by the media, and has had several notable mentions, including:

– FontFeed crediting National Punctuation Day with the revival of the interrobang, and

– CBS’ Live with Regis & Kelly mentioning National Punctuation Day on their morning television show in 2008.

To celebrate, make sure you use proper punctuation – and use #NationalPunctuationDay to post on social media.
