Win with Food Lovers Market

Another chance to win a R500 Food Lovers Market voucher

Bananas are a great source of potassium and are naturally free of cholesterol. However, they are often thrown away when considered too ripe, which is a pity, as even over-ripe bananas continue to have massive potential.

Charles Finlay, store manager at Food Lovers Market Westgate, has given us some tips that will prevent bananas from ripening too soon, as well as some tricks on how to repurpose bananas.

· Place bananas in the refrigerator, this slows the ripening process. Even though the skin of the banana will turn brown it will still be edible.

· Bananas that are too ripe are great for delicious puddings, banana bread, and healthy smoothies. As bananas are free of fat and cholesterol, mashed bananas are ideal as a replacement for the oils used when baking.

· Bananas also provide the body with a healthy balance of nutrients and fluids, which makes it ideal as a daily fruit.
