National Hug a Vegetarian Day

Give a vegetarian a hug on #NationalHugAVegetarianDay

“It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living, by its purely physical effect on the human temperament, would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind,” said Albert Einstein

Hug a Vegetarian Day is celebrated on 23 September to encourage you to go out and hug a vegetarian or vegan. This day was created to honour all those who have been brave enough to live a cruelty free life by eliminating meat from their diet.

Many believe there is no reason for mankind to continue eating animals, with plenty of arguments supporting this stance.

A diet free of meat and animal products is beneficial to our health and the environment. Considering the inhumane treatment of animals by today’s meat industry, the suffering those animals are subject to will be less if fewer people eat meat.

The history of this day is linked to the history of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), which was founded in 1949 by Ingrid Newkirk. She worked at an animal shelter and was abhorred by the way in which animals were treated. She began speaking out against it.

This day is recognising and showing appreciation for the often difficult transition to a meat and animal product free lifestyle. The food options for vegetarians and vegans tend to be limited at restaurants, and sometimes they are treated with hostility.

However, since the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle has gained popularity, more options and alternatives have been made available by the food industry.

So, to celebrate today, give a vegetarian or vegan you know a hug to thank them for being brave in their decision to save animal lives. Thank them for living a cruelty free life and respecting animals rather than consuming them.
