National Pecan Cookie Day

Pecans are good for you - and so are cookies! Enjoy a pecan cookie on #NationalPecanCookieDay

21 September is National Pecan Cookie Day and hungry snackers world-wide enjoy this delicious cookie.

The pecan cookie can be enjoyed morning, noon and night, and even in between.

Pecan trees are a species of hickory, originating from Mexico and the south, central and south-eastern United States. Today the tree is most widely cultivated in New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida and Texas. It has been the official state tree for Texas since 1919.

‘Pecan’ is an Algonquian word that means ‘a nut requiring a stone to crack’.

It is speculated that National Pecan Cookie Day originated in Texas, but no information supporting this could be found.

Pecan nuts are used in a variety of dishes including cookies. There is also a huge variety of pecan cookies such as butter, maple, chocolate, caramel, orange and spiced pecan cookies.

To celebrate today, use a tried and true pecan cookie recipe to bake a batch. Or browse the internet, find a recipe with a difference, and try something new.
