We ‘felt’ you needed a hat today! Why? Because 15 September is National Felt Hat Day.
The definition of a hat is as follows: a head-covering worn for protection against the elements, religious reasons, safety or as a fashion accessory. It was also a status indicator in the past and in the military it denoted rank and regiment.
Until the 20th century, hats played an important role in fashion and attire – far more than they do today.
Felt was a common material used for hats in the 19th century, and today you are encouraged to put on a felt hat and pay tribute to this historically significant – but somewhat neglected – accessory.
Felt is a non-woven cloth produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibres. It comes in various textures – some felt is very soft, while others are very tough, and can be used as construction materials. Felt can be any colour and made into any shape or size. Craft stores have large supplies of different colours suitable for kids’ crafts. Felt is also the oldest form of fabric known to humankind.
To celebrate, both women and men are encouraged to wear a felt hat all day long.
Kids are encouraged to join in and craft their own hats to wear as today is also Make A Hat Day.
So take out those felt hats and felt craft supplies and join in on the tradition of wearing a felt hat.
