National Video Games Day

Go down the path of digital reminiscence on #NationalVideoGamesDay

PlayStations, PCs, Xboxes, Gameboys and all the other gaming devices are honoured on 12 September as it is National Video Games Day!

Gaming has become a big part of our culture, influencing a lot of our life decisions, from our choice of clothing to our taste in cuisine.

There are even themed restaurants entirely dedicated to gamers and the games they love.

This day is entirely dedicated to recalling this part of our culture and sharing it with fellow gamers – old and new.

You are encouraged to get your game on!

The history of Video Games Day is really the history of the video game, and goes back much further than most people imagine.

The first ever created game was Bertie the Brain – a four-metre-tall machine built on vacuum tube technology – which was designed for playing Tic-Tac-Toe (best known as Noughts and Crosses here in South Africa). Bertie was not a very popular machine and was disassembled and never rebuilt.

A year later, in 1951, a computer called Nimrod was built. It was designed to play a game called Nim.

Things continued to develop after the video game’s humble beginnings, from the first hugely popular cabinet-style games (coin-operated), to the first home-based consoles on which you could play games.

The development of computers and video games continued in the years that followed, up to the point where they are now an undeniable part of our culture.

They are now a diversion for all ages and a standard part of most people’s homes – a far cry from the days when they were a luxury item for the rich and elite.

Celebrating National Video Games Day is easy and fun. Get together with your friends and family and play a bunch of video games!

Dig out some of your old consoles and play the game that was your favourite – and make sure to share this experience with the newer and younger generation of gamers or friends who haven’t seen them before. This is also the opportunity to try that brand new game.

Arrange a game play event at a local hall and invite a lot of people to get together to join in the fun – don’t forget the game-themed food, costumes and decorations!

Video Games Day is an excuse to go down the path of digital reminiscence – do it with a friend!
