Another black weekend for Witpoortjie

One stolen motorcycle recovered.

West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) and the police had their hands full this past weekend.

Friday started when WSRNW patrollers had to defuse a domestic spat when a man threatened to shoot his family. The man was finally calmed down. Twice during the day suspicious persons were reported in different areas of the suburb and at about 10am there was a housebreaking at the corner of Corlett Avenue and Robertson Street. A white Volkswagen Jetta is being linked to this and other crimes that have been committed in the area in the past. At about 4.45pm the Witpoortjie Medical Centre in Mc Grath Avenue reported that a man with a car jack was seen jumping over a wall on Strydom Street. The patrollers searched the area but could not find the man. Later the night an electrical cable of a generator in Kingsley Street was cut and a man was assaulted on the corner of Serfontein and Nickel Streets.

Saturday evening shots rang out at 6.40pm and WSRNW found people in Van Alkmaar Street who told them they had just fallen prey to an armed robbery. A TV set and jewellery were taken as well as their silver Toyota Yaris. Three suspects held them up in their house while a fourth waited outside in a dark green Honda. About 50 minutes later shots were heard in Fiskaal Street but the patrollers could not pinpoint its origin. At about 11.30pm they heard what sounded like three explosions. They checked all the ATMs in the area, suspecting it might have been an ATM robbery, but could not find any damaged ATMs.

At about 1pm, while patrollers were waiting at the Sasol service station on Progress Road a man approached them saying his motorcycle had just been stolen across from Plot 8. He allegedly ran out of fuel and walked to the service station to get petrol. The patrollers investigated and followed the motorcycle tracks on the dirt road that leads into Plot 8. They searched the veld adjacent to the informal settlement and with the help of the tracking company’s information they determined that the motorcycle was close to Hoërskool Die Adelaar. They followed the tracking company’s bakkie, as well as a Flying Squad vehicle, and entered Plot 8 from Nick Toomey Boulevard. The police and tracking company’s reaction officers then searched the veld where they found the motorcycle, a Kawasaki 1100, in a small maize field where it was covered with twigs, branches and leaves.

Just before 6pm patrollers also had to attended to a scene in Quellerie Street where a vehicle had hit a pedestrian .

All serious cases were handed over to the police, Metro police and emergency services.
