UPDATE: Petition started for baby Deon

ROODEPOORT – Marthinus Pelser, accused of murdering his son, will be applying for bail on 9 September.

‘He must rot in jail’ and ‘no bail’ are just some of the comments on a new online petition in an effort to keep Marthinus Pelser in jail.

Pelser was reported missing on 11 June after his six-month-old baby boy, Deon, was found dead in his cot. Pelser disappeared, but was found and arrested by Honeydew police four days later.

Pelser appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on 31 August with a legal representative at his side. It was made clear that Pelser, who initially did not want bail, would now be applying for bail. The case was postponed to 9 September for a formal bail application.

People concerned about justice for baby Deon, however, do not support this idea. Ronel Hayes started an online petition that will be handed over to Magistrate Delize Smith. The aim is to reach 500 signatures.

At the time of publication, the petition already had 426 signatures, only 24 hours after it was started. By signing the petition, one shows that one is opposed to Pelser getting bail.
