Photos: Vehicle crashes through motor dealership’s window

Two pedestrians hit, one critical.

Last weekend, a motor dealership in the Roodepoort Central Business District (CBD) experienced the opposite of the norm – instead of a happy customer driving a vehicle out of the showroom, a motorist drove through the window into it.

Paul Viljoen, an employee of Tiger Car Sales (which has been in Roodepoort since 1965) said the accident must have occurred sometime between 11pm on Saturday, 3 September and 1am on Sunday, 4 September. From what can be gathered, the vehicle in question was travelling on Dumat Street, from Ontdekkers Road, when the driver swerved out for pedestrians and lost control of his vehicle. In spite of attempting to avoid the pedestrians, he struck two of them and then crashed through the showroom window at the car dealership on the corner of Olivier Street. The driver fled on foot. Both pedestrians were injured, one of them critically.

“We can only speculate that the driver was drunk,” said Viljoen, who added, “in all these years nothing like this has ever happened to us”.

None of the dealership’s vehicles were damaged.
