National Cheese Pizza Day

Hold the toppings and enjoy a cheesy pie on #NationalCheesePizzaDay

5 September is the day on which one of the most popular pizza varieties is honoured.

Today is the day you say, “Hold the toppings, please”, because it’s National Cheese Pizza Day!

– The Ancient Greeks covered their breads with oil, herbs and cheese, leading some people to believe this to be the beginning of the pizza. In Byzantine Greek, the word ‘pita’ (meaning ‘pie’) was used.

– The Romans developed a dish made of a sheet of dough which they topped with cheese, honey and bay leaves.

– The modern pizza began as Neapolitan flat-bread in Italy, and the original pizza was made by using only mozzarella cheese, mainly the highest quality buffalo variant, which was produced in the surroundings of Naples.

– The production of pizza cheese in the United States in 1997 was estimated at two billion pounds.

– The first pizza establishment in the United States was opened in New York’s Little Italy in 1905.

– Pizza has become one of America’s, and the world’s, favourite meals.

To celebrate, order a cheese pizza from the pizzeria and have it delivered. Or, if you are feeling a bit adventurous, you can try something new and make your own.
