The majority of drivers have at some point experienced an issue with a car battery, whether they have to jump start their car after leaving their lights on or are struggling to get the car started in the morning, Battery Hub shares advice on how to care for your battery, and in turn, care for your car.
According to Battery Hub, a car battery has a typical lifespan of about three years, but the battery can last longer if it is of good quality and it is looked after.
Points to consider:
- Have your battery checked at least once a year
- Avoid overcharging the battery to prevent corrosion
- Freezing temperatures shorten battery life
- Short trips do not fully recharge batteries, which can affect life expectancy
- A swollen battery should be replaced
Warning signs that your battery is about to give in:
- ‘Check engine’ light on dashboard switches on
- If it takes longer than usual to start the engine
- A strong smell of sulphur or rotten egg indicates your battery is leaking and should be replaced.
