Swimming pools not ready for summer

Residents will have to wait a while before they can go swimming

Spring has sprung, which means it’s time for the official opening of public swimming pools, which usually happens on 1 September.

But residents in the Roodepoort and Florida area will have to wait a little bit longer before they can show off their bikini bodies and cool off in the Florida North and Florida Lake swimming pools.

According to Ward 70 councillor Caleb Finn, neither of the swimming pools will be open from tomorrow as was the original plan, because of urgent repairs and maintenance being done.

The Florida North pool is expected to be opened in about two weeks’ time, while the one at Florida Lake will only be opened in five weeks.

Finn reminded residents that these time-frames might be revised. “I will continue to liase with the City of Joburg’s Department of Sports and Recreation, and will update residents accordingly,” he said.

Eddie Mokoena, the Liaison Officer in the office of the MMC for Community Development, said that a number of pools will remain closed due to both minor and major repairs scheduled to take place. “There are pools where contractors have already started maintenance work. Therefore, each pool will open as soon as contractors finish the work,” he said.

Councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, MMC for Community Development assured residents that the department is working tirelessly to get all the pools repaired, and to ensure the City’s pools will be open at least five days a week throughout the summer season. She also asked for residents to be patient while repairs are completed at the affected swimming pools.

Community-based swimming clubs and residents are encouraged to utilise public swimming pools optimally and responsibly.
