National Letter Writing Day

Be old school and write a letter on #NationalLetterWritingDay

Use the opportunity on 1 September to remember the wonders of the handwritten word, as it is National Letter Writing Day.

Communication used to only happen in a couple of ways. You either sat down with someone and had a conversation or you wrote a letter and had it delivered.

A letter was a very intimate way of communication as each one bore the indelible mark of its creator.

A mailed letter could include a lot of things, from the subtle scents of your home and perfume to snippings from your garden.

The old method of a written letter carried a certain personal level that digital media just cannot quite achieve.

Richard Simpkin is the originator of National Letter Writing Day. He established this day a a tribute to the joy and excitement he experienced when he received a letter in his mailbox. His appreciation for the handwritten word came as a result of his project called “Australian Legends” where he wrote letters to people considered an Australian Legend requesting a personal interview and a photo session.

It was an amazing feeling to receive a letter with the legend’s personal touch.

The fact that a handwritten letter is a collectible item also helps its cause, as digital communication certainly is not.

To celebrate get a pen and paper and start writing.

Select an old friend or family member of any age and send them a written letter.

The younger ones will appreciate the excitemnt of receiving something so alien to them while a grandparent will cherish receiving something reminding them of the good old days.

Take the opportunity this day provides and work on your writing skills to let a loved one know they are worth the little extra effort.
