National Trail Mix Day

Have a healthy snack on #NationalTrailMixDay

National Trail Mix Day is observed annually on 31 August to honour the healthy snack that was developed to take on hikes.

The snack is ideal as it is lightweight, easy to store, nutritious and filled with carbohydrates from the dried fruits and granola, providing a quick energy boost. The fats in the nuts also provide sustained energy.

Two Californian surfers blended peanuts and raisins together in 1968 making an energy snack that allowed them to claim to have invented trail mix.

However, in the 1958 novel, The Dharma by Jack Kerouac, the two main characters describe trail mix in the planned meals for their hiking trip.

To celebrate, you can use your favourite ingredients and make your own trail mix.

If you are not up to making your own, you can find many varieties of trail mix at your grocery or convenience store.
