81-year-old hides while thugs ransack house

Wild car chase ensued.

This past Wednesday (24 August) at about 9.30am, while the Florida Visible Policing members were doing their normal patrol duties, they received a call from the shift commander about a housebreaking in progress on Lange Avenue in Quellerina.

The police immediately rushed to the address and on their arrival they saw a green Toyota Camry with three male occupants driving away from that address. They tried to stop them but the suspects sped off. During the chase that ensued the suspects skipped various traffic lights and signs. After nearly causing an accident they stopped the vehicle.

The Flying Squad, Tactical Response Team and other units from Florida Police Station came as backup. The suspects tried to flee on foot but were chased and apprehended. A search revealed housebreaking and car-breaking implements, and stolen items were also found. The suspects were arrested for housebreaking, possession of housebreaking implements, and possession of car-breaking implements.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 32 were detained at Roodepoort Police Station and will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court soon.

The 81-year-old victim had locked himself in a room while the robbers went about their business.
