One of the four triple murder suspects released

In a sudden turn of events, the State decided to withdraw all charges against Fabian Luff and he was released.

One of the four suspects arrested in connection with the Krugersdorp triple murders was released from police custody on the morning of 25 August.

Fabian Luff was released after making a brief appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrates‘ court as the State had withdrawn all charges against him.

Luff, 32, who was accused number two, was arrested early in June on a total of 10 charges; three for the murders of Anthony Scholefield, Kevin Mc Alpine and Hanle Lategan in May, three for robbery with aggravating circumstances, three for kidnapping, and one of theft.

After what felt to the family like a lifetime of waiting between the court proceedings and the investigation throughout June and July, the initial judge’s verdict was read out and the case against Luff was withdrawn within about two minutes.

“This has been an emotional roller-coaster for the entire family, but we knew all along that he was innocent,” his mother, who wanted to remain anonymous, said.

“He is free at last.”

Attorney Brandon, who represented Luff in court today, requested that no photos of him should be taken until a later stage.

Advocate Swanepoel announced on 30 June that Luff would not be applying for bail. Advocate Swanepoel was not present at today’s hearing due to illness.

The other three accused, Johannes Christiaan Kruger, 29, Leroux Steyn, 20 and Marcel Steyn, 18 are still in police custody awaiting their next court appearance on 13 October.
