Performing to perfection

RUIMSIG - 24 pupils make their school proud while they sing, dance, act and model to fame.

Most times, children can be seen with smiles on their faces and laughter in your ears, but 24 pupils from The King’s School West Rand do this while adding jazz hands and some extra moves to their attitude.

The King’s School boasts their very own Performing Arts Company (Pac) under the capable hands of coach, Mercia Swanepoel and manager, Gerrie Swanepoel. The team consists of 24 pupils from different ages – all passionate about the performing arts, whether it be drama, dance, singing or modelling.

Swanepoel explained that pupils from any school can join her company as long as they perform under The King’s School, West Rand’s name. She added that she is so proud of the pupils as they don’t get much time to practice, but are always willing to pull their weight. “If I need them to be here on a Saturday – they don’t hesitate,” she beamed.

Earlier this year, nine of the company’s pupils received gold medals in their various activities at the South African Championships and were extremely proud to show off their medals. A drama group, the Soulsisters, have been invited to perform at the Lyric Theatre on 27 August. “This is the third year in a row that they have won gold.” Swanepoel added, she wishes for them to find a sponsor so that they can compete in Los Angeles.

Swanepoel concluded, saying, her goal is to train well-rounded children who have confidence and who aren’t afraid to have their voices heard.
