#DaggaSpringbok: Lawyer misses court appearance

Case postponed until 1 September.

The former Springbok weightlifter who was arrested on 1 August for cultivating dagga, will have to wait another week to apply for bail after his lawyer failed to be present when he appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court today (23 August).

The lawyer allegedly could not find the court the accused was supposed to appear in. While he was attempting to get directions the magistrate called his client, but due to the lawyer’s absence the bail hearing was postponed until 1 September.

Although the case will be tried by Magistrate Delize Smith, the accused had to appear in front of another magistrate for the bail hearing in terms of the law.

At his previous appearance Smith scolded the accused for involving his 15-year-old daughter in his crime. On the day of his arrest he instructed her to destroy the dagga plants before the police came. On these grounds, and the fact that he has a nine-year-old son who lives with him, she said she would oppose bail. Smith first wanted Social Services to establish whether the children were in any danger should the accused be released on bail.
