Rock the Vote

Election Day was the theme of this month's meeting

Election Day was the theme of the night when members of Florida Toastmasters met earlier this month (2nd August).

President Tim Knights extended a warm welcome to members, visitors and guests.

Toastmaster Dick Hallett set the tone for Rock the Vote. He opened with words said by Nelson Mandela, at the Cosatu Conference in 1993:

“If the ANC does to you what the Apartheid government did to you, then you must do to the ANC what you did to the Apartheid government”.

The educational session, Creating the Best Club Climate, was presented by Tebogo Legodi. During her presentation, she focused on the criteria required to retain and promote membership growth by creating a warm caring atmosphere.

In his speech entitled The Essence of Life, Tino Chadyiwa echoed the famous words of former CEO of Coca Cola, Bryan Dyson, who said, “Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some 5 balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit and you’re keeping all these in the air. You will understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other 4 balls – family, health, friends and spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. It is not the size of our actions but the amount of love and care that is put into them that is the fragile thread that binds us together.”

Paul Muller demonstrated how to deliver quick, powerful blows with nearly every part of the body, including dangerous kicks with legs. Karate also consists of hard and soft styles and martial arts teachers are usually certified with the achievement of an advanced black belt status. Martial arts are not about fighting; they’re about building character. Like Brandon Lee, Paul believes that martial arts are a search for something inside, not just a physical discipline.

Conquering the cold call was the title of Elize Elli’s speech. She called on Michael Glencross to create a scenario for her to demonstrate the art of handling objections in selling.

“It is critical for success to be good at handling objections in selling, because objections are guaranteed to come up throughout your sales cycle. When looking to drive sales growth, handling objections is an area that is often not looked at enough. Small changes can lead to big results and yield greater returns,” she said.

Craig Ellis was next up on the podium and entitled his speech Don’t procrastinate – Vegetate. “People may have heard of the concept of the Illuminati, but they cannot be sure whether or not it is the stuff of myth, legend and superstition, or whether this organisation really has infiltrated every aspect of society and controls the population of the world. Conspiracy theorists would have you believe that the Illuminati are still at large, controlling the world on a global scale due to their presence inside financial institutions, national governments and even multi-national organisations. The Illuminati and the so-called New World Order are now two concepts that are often portrayed as inseparable entities but they are actually mutually exclusive. You don’t want to be in a situation where you do not have the chance to take responsibility for your own destiny. Self-reliance is the way forward,” he said.

The Trophy for the Best Prepared Speech was awarded to Paul Muller. As a result of a draw, Robert de Kramer and Michael Glencross shared the Trophy for the Best Speech Evaluator. Max Kaan was presented with the trophy for the best Impromptu Speech.
