National Senior Citizens Day

Support, honor and show appreciation to our senior citizens on #NationalSeniorCitizensDay

Ronald Reagan said, “For all they achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.”

National Senior Citizens Day is celebrated annually on 21 August and was declared in 1988 when Ronald Reagan signed a Presidential Proclamation.

This day was created to create opportunities for us to support, honour and show appreciation to our senior citizens and to show recognition for their achievements and contributions made to communities.

Our gratitude can be shown by ensuring our communities are places where older people can participate to the fullest. It must also be an environment where they can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue living their lives with independence and dignity.

To celebrate spend some time with senior citizens you know. This can be your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or even neighbours. Let them know they are loved and appreciated.

Today is also a good opportunity to volunteer at a retirement home and share your smile with those who do not always receive visitors.

If you are a senior citizen check at your local restaurants or stores for promotions or discounts offered.
