Coalition governance dealt a blow in City of Joburg

How will the hung municipality work now?

Members of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have been unable to agree on terms to form a coalition government in the City of Joburg during their negotiations.

The two parties did however agree to vote together to form metros in Gauteng.

Mmusi Maimane, leader of the DA, said negotiations with the EFF were conducted in good faith and they were clear about who they were. “We will never agree on ideological issues, but I welcome the fact that they (the EFF) said they will vote with us,” Maimane said.

The EFF leader, Julius Malema, said they are willing to vote with the DA in the City of Joburg municipality, providing certain conditions are met. He said the party is not willing to compromise on service delivery due to ideological differences.

What does this mean for the municipality of the City of Joburg?

Simply put, it means there is a good chance of Herman Mashaba leading the city.

But before this can happen, all the parties involved need to attend the inaugural sitting of the council, which will take place on 22 August.

If no party has achieved an outright majority through coalitions, voting will commence, and all party members present at the sitting will cast their votes for the people they want to fill the positions of mayor and the rest of the council.

The Record will keep readers updated with further developments and results after the council sitting takes place.
