Community figure dies in motorcycle accident

HORIZON – Anna-Marie Russell and her husband Alan were involved in a motorcycle accident.

A community figure in Horizon, also known internationally for her involvement in Christian education, Anna-Marie Russell, died in a motorcycle accident on a breakfast run with her husband on the R512 in Hartbeespoort, close to the new Lion Park.

Max Cohen, spokesperson for Emer-G-Med emergency roadside service, confirmed the accident took place about 11am on the morning of 7 August. Emer-G-Med arrived on scene to find another emergency service treating Anna-Marie and her husband, Alan.

“It’s believed that a car turned in front of their bike, and they T-boned the car,” Cohen reported. Anna-Marie and Alan both sustained multiple fractures and internal injuries and required immediate advanced life support intervention. They were rushed to hospital for further treatment. Anna-Marie later died in hospital.

Anna-Marie was known in the community as an ex-principal of The King’s School West Rand and had been working as the regional director of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) for the past 10 years.

Current principal at The King’s School West Rand and the chairmain of the board of ACSI, Ken Langley, wrote, “Anna-Marie Russell is one of the heroes of the West Rand, who was known the world over for her enthusiasm and passion for Christian education. Anna-Marie had been out with her husband on a breakfast run when the accident occurred, and her husband Alan remains in ICU at this stage where his condition is described as stable.”

“Her work allowed her the opportunity to promote the Christian school movement all over the world and her passing is mourned from as far as the USA, Australia, Canada, Hungary and countless other nations.

In South Africa, she is remembered by hundreds of previous students, as someone who always had a kind word and who spoke of blessing and purpose for even the naughtiest students; in fact, especially for them,” Langley added.

Anna-Marie is survived by her two daughters, Mia and Kim and her husband Alan. “Alan sustained numerous fractures in the accident and the family have asked for friends to pray for his full recovery,” Langley added on behalf of the family.
