Woman with spinal injuries still not treated after 24h

DA shadow MEC calls incident 'shocking'

A 34-year-old Florida resident, Farida Gafoor, whose vehicle was involved in a serious accident with a taxi yesterday morning (10 August), has yet to receive medical treatment by the time this article is being published.

According to her uncle Shamil Fakir the accident occurred at the corner of Goldman Street and 8th Avenue at about 8pm. Gafoor was taken to Helen Joseph Hospital with suspected spinal injuries, not being able to move. She also sustained a gash to her head. She allegedly has been lying on a wheeled stretcher in the Casualty Department’s hallway for more than 24 hours without receiving any medical attention.

DA shadow Member of the Executive Committee for Health, Jack Bloom, called the incident “shocking”. “The Casualty Department should prioritise serious injuries. This is seriously problematic and ridiculous,” said Bloom.

Bloom promised to take up the matter with the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Raymond Billa immediately. The Record is currently awaiting feedback from the family as well as Bloom, and is attempting to contact the hospital for comment.
