This is what the Record looked like 10 years ago

Join us on a walk down memory lane on this Throw Back Thursday

Take a trip down memory lane as you join the Record‘s Throw Back Thursday (TBT).

The date selected for this TBT is 11 August 2006, which will take you back ten years.

On this day, the front page of the paper featured a photo of Henriëtte Bester, who was the Police’s Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Gauteng at that time.

The front page story was about two brothers who had a night out at Maloneys that ended in disaster. One brother ended up in hospital and an assault case was opened against the nightclub.

Other top stories were a crime initiative by the police, which was not received well by Witpoortjie’s residents, and a war against taxi drivers driving recklessly on Ontdekkers Road.

The paper also featured tips for women, from a self-defense expert.

In 2006, you could buy 600g Keloggs Rice Krispies at the P’nP Family Supermarket for only R19,79; 200g Nescafé Coffee was R24,75 and eight kilograms of Bobtail dog food would have set you back by R36,95.

If you went to the P’nP Hyper, seven kilograms of potatoes would have cost R18,99; 750ml cooking oil was R5,99 and a one litre Clover milk sachet was R4,99.

A look through the Classifieds section would have brought you more surprises. If you were looking to rent a fully furnished, one-bedroom flat in Florida, with a carport and separate entrance, it would only have cost you R1 900 per month. Rather have a house? In Helderkruin, a four-bedroom house with maid’s quarters, lounge, dining room, kitchen, scullery and two and a half bathrooms would have cost you a mere R6 500 per month – and that included electricity!

Some of the job vacancies advertised in 2006 were:

– Junior Credit Controller with experience. Salary offered – R3 000 a month

– The Mielieboer Band was looking for a drummer

– A sales company offered sales positions to persons aged 40 and older with a basic salary and commission.

The big sporting event covered on the paper’s back page was the PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular.

Nothing changes – and everything stays the same!
