National Lighthouse Day

Follow the light beam to safety on #NationalLighthouseDay

National Lighthouse Day is observed annually on 7 August.

This day honours the beacon of light that for many years symbolised the safety and security for ships and boats at sea.

A lighthouse is described as a tower designed to emit light. This light is used as a navigation aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways.

The United States Congress approved an act for the “establishment and support of lighthouse beacons, buoys and public piers” in 1789. 200 years later the Congress designated 7 August as National Lighthouse day.

A lighthouse marks dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs and safe entries into harbours and assist with aerial navigation.

Lighthouses have declined due to high maintenance costs and the use of modern electronic navigational systems.

The lighthouse has a source light called a lamp which could be electric or oil fuelled. Originally it was lit by an open fire and later on with candles.

The oldest existing lighthouse in the United States is the Sandy Hook in New Jersy. This lighthouse was built in 1764 and is still in operation.

Visiting and photographing lighthouses as well as collecting ceramic replicas have become a popular hobby.

To celebrate visit a lighthouse if possible.

Share your photos of lighthouses and use #NationalLighthouseDay to post on social media.
