A year’s doughnut supply worth the wait

STRUBEN'S VALLEY – The fourth Krispy Kreme opened in South Africa in Clearwater Mall on 1 August and one patient patron waited for 48 hours to be first in line for a year's supply of doughnuts.

For nearly 24 hours Deon Gous sat in his camp chair in front of the highly-anticipated Krispy Kreme store in Clearwater Mall.

He was the first person to enter the fourth Krispy Kreme, renowned for its doughnuts, which opened on 1 August in South Africa. For his patience, Gous received a prize of a dozen glazed doughnuts every week for an entire year.

“I did it for my kids,” Gous laughed.

Knowing it was not something everyone would do, the exhausted-looking Gous was relieved to order a small box of doughnuts in his winning T-shirt and get to bed.

“I slept for about an hour”.

He was followed by hundreds more.

Virginia and Marcia Augustine were the second and third to wait in line. They set up camp shortly after Gous the day before. The mother and daughter duo combined will receive a dozen glazed doughnuts for the next nine months.

About 20 more decided to camp out in the mall’s food court. All of them, including the rest of the first 50 in line received a dozen glazed doughnuts every month for the next year. The next 50 people in line received a dozen glazed doughnuts every month for the next six months and free T-shirts.

Marketing director of Fournews, Krispy Kreme’s franchise, Nick Eleftheriadis, said this is the first Krispy Kreme in the West Rand.

” After this opening, we will be launching a Krispy Kreme in South Africa every month for the rest of the year. By December there will be eight Krispy Kreme’s in the country,” he said.

The American brand launched in South Africa little over a year ago. Many people, like Hannah and Deon Bothma became instant fans. The couple also braved the cold food court. Deon said he caught up on reading the latest Harry Potter book.

While many had the day off from work, some who slept over still headed to their desks after ordering a freshly-baked Krispy Kreme.
