No reports of unrest in Joburg

JOBURG – The 2016 Municipal Elections comes to a close with no unrest reported in Joburg.

As voting came to an end during the 2016 Municipal Elections, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya said he is pleased to report that voting generally went smoothly throughout the country.

Despite tents blowing over in gale force winds, an IEC official being seriously injured in a car accident and deaths of two voters at and near voting stations, voting has not been disrupted. This except for in Vuwani, Limpopo, where residents locked IEC officials out of voting stations and barricaded roads around several stations..

In the City of Johannesburg, where both the Democratic Alliance and the African National Congress are confident they will win, no reports of unrest were mentioned.

Voting stations officially closed at 7pm but voters who are still queuing to vote will have the opportunity to cast their vote in what many call the most contested democratic elections in South Africa, since 1994.

Moepya said that the voting results will come in once counting is concluded.
