3 August is National Watermelon Day.

Watermelon is a fruit enjoyed by many and is a summertime favourite. The watermelon is usually consumed at picnics, lounging next to the swimming pool or at fairs.

A watermelon consists of 92 percent water and that is the reason why it is so refreshing.

Watermelon is a vine-like flowering plant originating from South Africa. The fruit is also called a watermelon and is a special kind of berry botanists refers to as a pepo.

The watermelon fruit is loosely considered a melon and has a smooth exterior rind which is usually green with dark green stripes.The inside of the watermelon is a deep red, juicy and sweet flesh.

Watermelons can grow very large and competitions can be found where prizes are awarded for the largest one. The Guinness Book of Records states the weight of the heaviest watermelon at 262 pounds.
