Schools unite for a better West Rand

The United Schools of the West had a meeting last Friday (29 July) at Florida Park High School (Parkies). Representatives from Hoërskool Die Adelaar, Tulip High School, West Ridge High School and Princess High School attended the event to discuss the progress and challenges faced after establishing the collaboration between these schools.

Earlier this year, these schools launched their cooperative initiative. Their aim is to work together, creating unity among the schools, decreasing the socio-economic problems that exist, and running tournaments and programmes throughout the year.

“We launched in April, and today we’re hosting a joint feedback session. At Parkies for example, we had a vetkoek sale and used it to inform our pupils, who were excited about the collaboration. This has generated more ideas and suggestions from enthusiastic pupils about which extra-curricular activities would benefit them,” said Florida Park High School’s Candice Harris.

She added that as the initiative has grown, pupils have improved academically and become more involved in extra-curricular activities, keeping them productive and off the streets.

“The Disciplinary Council, made up of Grade 11 pupils, is also involved, as they will be taking over from us next year. We want to help them find projects that will improve the United Schools of the West, even after we have left. We also want to thank Princess High School for coming up with this idea and motivating these wonderful schools to work together,” she said.
