Update: Murder victim was much loved

Community pays tribute to 'Oom Joe' on social media.

The community was shocked and stunned at the news of the murder of 73-year-old Jose ‘Oom Joe’ Mendonca last Saturday.

Various residents who knew Mendonca have paid tribute to him on social media. Mendonca owned various units in the Villa Monte Carlo complex, where he was found murdered in a store room. Esmé Eloff wrote “Rus in vrede Oom” while Magriet Groenwald said “Die oom was altyd so vriendelik en vol lewe”. Jurian Killian wrote “Ai, you will be missed … RIP oom Joe”. Amanda Daniels Hertfurth described the murder as “so sad”.

Linda Weller de Nobrega, who rented a unit from Mendonca, said her husband and Mendonca got along like a house on fire because they were both from Madeira in Portugal. “He was the kindest, most loving man ever. You could always talk to him. The murder is such a mystery because although they took his bakkie, they left his wallet and other belongings. We hope the people who did this will be caught soon,” she said before saying one last time that the Record must make sure the community knows “he was the kindest man you could ever meet”.

Mendonca will be buried on Saturday 30 July, from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 064 Luipaard Street. The service will take place at 12 noon.
