Scammers acting as JW officials

JOBURG – Johannesburg Water (JW) said purchase orders should be verified through its supply chain management unit.

Johannesburg Water (JW) has issued a statement warning of scammers acting as officials within the utility.

The utility warned service providers of fake requests scam for quotations, purchase orders and payments as a scam and advised that users should be more vigilant.

“There have been a number of requests from fake sources claiming to be Johannesburg Water officials, asking for quotations, sending purchase orders and payment notifications to unsuspecting victims using fictitious email addresses,” JW spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said.

The utility referred to the two email addresses below as the said sources:

“Whilst the Johannesburg Water logo, physical and postal addresses appearing on documentation may appear to be correct, on close scrutiny you will notice that the company’s name has been extended, the contact persons, telephone numbers, fax and email addresses are fictitious,” she said.

Chuene explained that if any of the fraudulent requests are accepted, JW will not be held accountable. She referred service providers to confirm any request through JW’s supply chain management unit by contacting 011 688 6535.

You can report any suspicious or corrupt activity at the City of Johannesburg’s anti-fraud hotline number at 0800 002 587.
