Photos: Lightning sets Jeep and house alight

Bystanders could hear vehicle's tyres exploding.

Lightning caused serious damage when it struck a Jeep Wrangler in Blue Bell Street this morning (26 July). It caught fire and in turn set a house alight.

According to Ivan Shaw of DMS Security, who was among the first on the scene, a neighbour said he just heard a loud crashing noise at around 10am and then saw the smoke. The lightning apparently struck the vehicle through the garage roof. Fortunately no one was at home and DMS Security’s reaction officers managed to save the family pets.

While still on the scene Shaw told the Record that he could hear the Jeep’s tyres exploding.

ER24 and Johannesburg Emergency Management Services attended to the scene.
