Families evicted after failing to pay rent

HONEYDEW – About 16 families are evicted in Honeydew after failing to pay rent for the past three months.

About 16 families from five complexes in Honeydew were evicted from their homes this week.

Tenants who allegedly were not paying their rent for the past three months were left stranded with their belongings outside the complexes on the corner of Glover Street and Deysel Road.

Scores of them could be seen gathering their belongings with some trucks collecting items. Most tenants did not want to speak to the media.

One of the owners, who did not wish to be named, said the residents were served with notices over the past two weeks but still failed to pay their monthly rents.

“The sheriff have a list with names of people to be evicted; they were not paying rent,” said one of the residents, Ali Masango.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said the eviction operation started at 9am. “The eviction was properly planned and proper procedure was followed,” she said.

She explained that tenants did not comply with the notices and there was a High Court order.
