Parkies beanies in Floroma

Parkies pupils donate beanies to Old Age Home

A group of pupils from Florida Park High School paid Floroma Old Age Home a visit today (21 July) to hand over more than 120 beanies which were knitted by members of the school’s staff for the home’s residents.

The pupils are part of the school’s Interact Group, a community council that focuses on various charity and community initiatives. The group, accompanied by their teacher Cavim Buckley and Principal Stella du Preez, were welcomed with open arms at the home. They arrived just in time to assist the senior citizens in a game of bowls played with rubber balls before handing over the beanies and a few blankets.

Earlier in the week, the school’s secretary, Nicky Smuts, donated 67 beanies she had knitted to the children’s oncology department at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, as part of the school’s Mandela Day initiative.

Principal du Preez, who proudly knitted 27 beanies, said it was important to give back to the community and teach pupils the importance of helping those in need.

”We are blessed, so we have to bless others and give something to the community,” she said.

Allister de Haas, a resident in the Home was ecstatic with the visit, making friends with a few pupils and inviting them for more visitations. “We are so grateful for today. The pupils should come visit us again, especially during school holidays. It would be fun to have them brighten up our days,” he said.
