#MandelaDay at Florida Baby Home

Florida Baby Home on Mandela Day

The young pupils of Treehouse Kindergarten paid a visit to Florida Baby Home as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day. Accompanied by their head teacher Sharn Mitchell, the pupils donated various items such as clothing and toys. They also played with the babies.

House mother Joan Drotske was happy with the visit from the Kindergarten and said taking care of children is a full-time job.

“We are currently taking care of seven baby boys and another four babies will join us by the end of the week. Their ages range from five months to 22 months. Every morning by 4.30am we’re up getting breakfast ready for the babies while other house mothers get their baths and bottles ready. We have to make sure the house is clean and do the washing. This all happens before 10am,” she said.

The Kindergarten pupils were joined by HouseHoppers staff members who chose to spend their Mandela Day helping at the home. HouseHoppers director Cheri Sun said they will help establish a vegetable garden for the home as well as cooking soup to package and freeze.

“Every year we choose a charity to assist and this year we are here. We want the Home to be self-sustaining so they will be able to assist more people in the community. Some of our staff are from areas such as Zandspruit and Diepsloot so they understand what it’s like to come from a disadvantaged background. Now they are here to help turn around such a cycle,” she said.
