National Lollipop Day

Enjoy a lollipop on #NationalLollipopDay

National Lollipop Day is observed on 20 July and is sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.

Lollipops come in many flavour, colours and shapes. They range from small sizes which can be purchased by the bag full, to the very large ones made out of candy canes twisted into circles.

Lollipops are given away on numerous occasions at various establishments such as banks, barber shops, parades and the doctor’s office.

The history of the first lollipop is unclear. It is speculated they were invented during the American Civil War (1861 – 1865), while others believe lollipops have been around since the early 1800’s.

George Smith often gets the credit for inventing the modern style lollipop in 1908, when he decided to put candy on a stick to make it easier to eat.

He trademarked the lollipop name in 1931.

The name came from a popular racehorse at the time, named Lolly Pops.

To celebrate, enjoy a lollipop today.
