Westgate Shoppping Centre dancing for Madiba

The Westgate Madiba Jive!

On Saturday, 16 July, Westgate Shopping Centre partnered with the Cape Town-based NPO No Danger Diaries to host a mass jive in honour of Mandela Day.

Westgate pledged R25 000 to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the We Love Africa Fund, and invited shoppers of all ages, shapes and sizes to participate in their video submission for the Dance for Madiba Campaign.

This global initiative will be creating a Madiba Jive Mashup as part of the Word’s Greatest Madiba Jive Tribute to date.

A festive vibe was felt as shoppers, representatives from Centre Management, various tenants, security and cleaning staff were led through the shopping centre by a dancer wearing a cartoonish Mandela mask and carrying a huge boombox.

Everyone jitterbugged and “Mandela shuffled” together, shouting, “Madiba! Madiba!” and bringing smiles to shoppers’ faces.

The jive participants were rewarded for their efforts with free coffee, cupcakes, doughnuts and goodie bags.

Twenty children and three caregivers from Sparrow Village received gifts donated by the shopping centre.

Zoe Lipinsky represented Dance for Madiba and received the cheque from Nicolette Carlese, GM of Westgate.

Nicolette spoke a few words to the audience, and reminded them of the importance of Mandela Day and how much #WestgateCares about its people and community.

Three donation boxes for non-perishables were set up, one each at entrance two, four and five.

The shopping centre will distribute the donated items to various charities in the area.
