The zoo come to school

WILGEHEUWEL - Pupils of Dios Los Ninos have a whole zoo full of animals visit their school.

As Dios Los Ninos (DLN) believes in a practical and hands-on approach, the school invites Fanie Barnardt and his to visit the pupils at school every year.

“All our pupils take part in this inning. It is fantastic as we don’t have the risk of transporting learners, but still they get exposed to a wide variety of animals. Fanie brings different animals to us every year,” said principal of DLN, Leonie de Kock.

“His approach is practical and realistic. He gives the pupils facts about each animal species and tells them which animals will make good pets or not and why. This helps a lot, as many children have a unrealistic idea of certain animals or simply want them because they are ‘cute’ without knowing basic facts about the animal,” De Kock added.

This year Barnhardt brought snakes, spiders, a meerkat, chinchillas, parrots, hedgehogs, a scorpion, turtles, a monkey, bearded dragons and lizards.

Besides factual information, Barnhardt also tells the pupils about certain religious or cultural myths regarding different animals, which is always insightful and loved by the pupils.
