Hopping problem in park

Rabbits dumped in park to fend for themselves

A Florida Park resident has been experiencing numerous problems with unwanted rabbits left in Len Rutter Park across from her house.

The individuals guilty of this are unknown.

For the past five years Tatiana Zachos Ligocki has been spending her free time rescuing these animals. “People buy rabbits as pets for their children. As soon as they realise how much their care requires are, they just dump them in the park to fend for themselves.”

She said some of the stray rabbits find their way into her yard because they can smell the other rabbits she has rescued. At the moment she is caring for 12 rabbits, all rescued. She said she cannot keep taking in these animals. “People are not aware that rabbits require a lot of attention and vet care (spaying/ neutering is essential). A female rabbit can have between 50 and 60 babies a year.”

A family of three rabbits were found in the park yesterday (13 July). Only the kitten (baby) could be caught. The adult rabbits could not be found today (14 July) either. “The adults need to be found, as they are in urgent need of medical care.”

She works closely with Lauren Namer from Little Critter Rescue Club to re-home the stray rabbits. The rabbits are placed in foster care, provided with medication and are spayed and neutered. A home check is done before the rabbits can be adopted. This is all done by the Little Critters Rescue Club. Up to date, 28 rabbits have been successfully adopted.
