Dantè loses battle to rare disease

Baby boy passes away.

Fifteen-month-old baby boy Dantè Smit has sadly lost his battle with Schinzel-Giedion syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. He passed away on Wednesday 13 July, at 5.40am, at his family’s home in Grobler Park.
Dantè was discharged from hospital two weeks ago after being hospitalised with pneumonia. His mother, father, brother, grandparents, family members and friends are all distraught, as Dantè’s health was improving after returning from hospital. The doctor even said at his check-up last week that Dantè was the healthiest he’d ever been since his birth.

“We spoke about Danté’s improvement over the weekend. We were so amazed with the fact that we were going into the 6th week where our little angel was seizure free. He’d been free of kidney infections since December and even though he was still fighting numerous other complications, we saw God at work in his healing, and we were truly grateful,” Leandra said.

“He had such a good day and night on Monday and Tuesday. Everything was going well. He was different from his usual self. He wasn’t in pain or anything. I can’t describe how the family feels at the moment, because we were all fighting so hard to keep him with us,” she said.

“We believed, we kept on fighting together with Danté, never giving up hope, even though the odds were against him. We did all the research we could and I even said to Dirkie (my husband) that maybe we would find the answer to this syndrome in the various natural methods of fighting the disorder. And we truly believed that God would heal him. After all, miracles happen every day, ” Leandra said.

Danté’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, 19 July. He will be given the opportunity to spread the wings he has truly earned with his endurance and fighting spirit, and fly with the angels.
