Foundation out to create jobs

Foundation works hard in community to rid it of social ills

The Saeed Foundation has started working at its new premises in Florida North. The property was donated to the foundation by M&S Electrical and Construction.

The Foundation is a West Rand non-profit organisation that has been operating since 2013. Even before that, founders Saeed and Salama Jardine Abrahams have been giving back to the community for many years through feeding schemes and community upliftment programmes by using arts and culture, and community open days.

Having obtained these premises, Saeed and Salama are starting to channel their efforts and services to provide sustainable support to the community. They want to do this by providing a skills development centre. The mission will be to provide a platform to transfer skills through accredited training, mentorship and business readiness programmes with the objective of contributing to the alleviation of social ills.

“We don’t want people to wait for handouts. By providing skills we are helping them become self-reliant. More skilled people mean more opportunities for employment,” said Saeed.

The Foundation plans to work with a collective of constructive and like-minded partners from corporate and public sectors. Most of the training offered will focus on up-skilling and sustaining women. It will be conducted by accredited facilitators and assessors, with material accredited by the relevant organisations. The offerings are garment manufacturing, home economics, agriculture, general maintenance, hair and beauty, IT and setting up a small business.

The Foundation works across all communities regardless of religion, and hopes to have a community that boasts an increased number of skilled and employed people, and a decrease in social ills.

“The Foundation relies on sponsorship and fundraising. We have undertaken many fundraising activities to complete the centre, and the public has been tremendously supportive; however, more assistance from corporate South Africa and government will help in completing the centre,” said Saeed.

The foundation is still undergoing minor construction and will be officially opened in January next year.
