Don’t let your days be numbered

Do the simple test.

Although various organisations have repeatedly stressed the importance of having a visible house number, many residents still seem not to realise the importance of the issue.

Safety practitioner Louis Grobler of Safety in Practice (Sip), has once again urged the public to address this rampant problem.

“The public can do a simple test. Take a walk down your driveway, stand in the middle of the road and look for your house number. If you can see it and have no doubt anyone else can see it, smile and go back inside,” said Grobler. “On the other hand, if you cannot see it, or it is absent, consider for a moment how the emergency service you just called to come rescue you from a criminal, a fire, an electrocution or any other mishap of your choice will find you”.

“You know where you live. They do not. It is a basic necessity to have your house number in clear view to anyone who may be driving quite fast to help you. Failing to have your street number clearly visible is also a punishable offence in terms of municipal bylaws. If you ignore this request you do so at your own peril,” Grobler concluded.
