UPDATE: Only half of the job is done

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Tall grass in greenbelt area still not fully cut.

The RiverWel Residents Association (RWRA) only won half the battle with the tall grass at the Cockspur Bridge along the Klein Jukskei River in Weltevreden Park.

Roodepoort Northsider recently reported that this residents association has been battling for months to get Johannesburg City Parks to cut the tall grass. Ward 126 Councillor, Mike Tonkin visited the greenbelt with the residents association and officials from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo  in May to try and reach an agreement regarding the tall grass issue.

Tonkin said the grass is a security risk because criminals can hide in the grass. Mulalo Mbedzi from City Parks gave his word that they will cut the grass by the end of June.

Councillor Tonkin confirmed that sections of the grass were cut but only half of the job was done. “I messaged City Parks over the weekend asking them to complete the job, but I haven’t received any response yet,” he said. He added that he suggested to City Parks that they use their Extended Works Programme (EWP) which means that it is employees who pick up the slack when work is not finished.

“They work on a semi-casual basis and are very good with completing tasks,” said Councillor Tonkin.
