Workaholics, take a break

You work so much that it has negatively influenced your health

Some people take the saying “Time is Money” to heart and dedicate all their time to making that money. Today, Workaholics Day, is a day for them.

Today, 5 June, is a day for all hardworking people to take a break and relax. Take note that this is not a day for the average worker, but for those who truly go the extra mile: those who don’t take lunch, the first to arrive and last to leave and who never take holidays. Today is a day for the true workaholics.

A workaholic is someone who is addicted to work. They work all the time. Many will sacrifice almost anything for the sake of their jobs, be it personal comfort or family time. A workaholic can also be defined as a person who works excessively and compulsively and is unable to detach from their work. It can be considered a serious condition and can cause the deterioration of health.

Here are some signs you may be a workaholic:

– You think about how you can free up more hours to work.

– You usually spend much more time on work than you initially intended.

– You work in order to reduce feelings of guilt, anxiety, helplessness or even depression.

– You have been told by others that you need to cut down on work (and you usually don’t listen to them).

– You become stressed if you’re prohibited from working.

– You push aside other activities like hobbies, leisure activities and exercise because of your work.

– You work so much that it has negatively influenced your health.

In order to break away from being a workaholic, one needs to learn to disengage from work. After all, work is just a part of your life, not your whole existence. Here are some suggestions on how to relax more at work:

1. Eat breakfast. Take time in the morning to sit down and eat a good, healthy breakfast. This will give you time to calm down after the morning rush as well as nourish and energize you for the rest of the day.

2. Go to work earlier. Avoid the morning traffic and the bustle of lots of people around you by getting to work early. Getting to work earlier will also allow you to gather your thoughts and prepare yourself for the day ahead.

3. Meditate. When your day gets stressful, take time out to breathe deeply and meditate to calm yourself.

4. Eliminate clutter. If your desk is messy you’ll feel more stressed and under pressure. Clean up your space and feel the worries melt away.

5. Play music. Do this throughout the day or wear headphones if you can. This will keep you calm and happy.

Whether you choose to take the day off or simply extend your lunch hour, take it easy because today you can have a break. So workaholics treat yourself for going beyond the call of duty.
