JMPD responds to Donovan McDonald Home’s security concerns

In order to solve the security problems, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is installing CCTV security cameras and alarm systems across the city.

The outcry from the residents of the Donovan McDonald Old Age Home concerning the apparently inadequate security at the centre has resulted in Superintendent SF Malapane issuing the following response:

According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), the role of the security guards at the centre is to patrol and safeguard the premises of the Home, prevent illegal entry, and prevent removal of the city’s assets. In addition, they are there to protect the staff and residents by preventing and/ or minimising risk and injury, including death. The JMPD says security is regularly evaluated and the centre is a safe place.

“As far as I know, all the security challenges that were brought to my attention have been addressed. The fact that there are too few security guards must be laid at the door of the Department of Housing and its budget,” said Malapane.

In order to solve the security problems, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is installing CCTV security cameras and alarm systems across the city. How long this will take is uncertain as it is an ongoing process.

The residents of the Home voiced concerns over security following reports of stolen goods such as a stolen car that the owner was never compensated for. There were also reports that visitors are not checked in and that security guards sit on their phones instead of working. These problems have been continuing for a number of months.

The Department of Housing was approached to give comment on issues such as maintenance and illegal residents, but has yet to respond.
