Dancing to New York

Khani Chauke heading off to New York

Khani Chauke, who is a mere 17 years old, will be jetting off to New York in July.

The talented dancer excelled in the South African rounds of the American Dance competition. The event was held in September in Pretoria. She wowed judges with her Lyrical (grand piano) and contemporary character dance performances. Khani will now participate in the final round of the competition in New York.

The Witpoortjie resident is excited to have an opportunity to visit the dance capital of the world. “This will expose me to so many new and exciting experiences. Dancing is a way to express myself. Dance is my passion and I feel in control when I’m in the moment. My favourite dance genres are Contemporary and Lyrical,” she said.

Khani started ballet and gymnastics at the age of three and dreams of being successful in her chosen field. This will enable her to support her community by opening a dance company.

She would not have reached her goal of going to New York without instructor Mark Tadford, who’s been in her corner supporting her. His 25 years’ experience as a teacher, has enabled Mark to guide Khani all the way. He has been teaching tap, contemporary, jazz, lyrical and hip-hop dancing at the Discovery Recreation Centre for 20 years.

“Being an instructor is a calling for me. I’ve always been drawn to people so maybe if I was not a dance teacher I would be a school teacher or psychologist. That is why I started Mark’s Dance School,” he said.

Mark has instilled discipline and technique in all his pupils, including Khani, and his joy comes from seeing them perform on international stages.

“Seeing my pupils excelling in big competitions overseas makes me happy to be their instructor,” said Mark.

The two are now working hard, rehearsing for the upcoming competition in New York.
