Pupils return to the ‘place of origin’

RADIOKOP - Charterhouse pupils take a trip to rediscover the Cradle of Humankind.

One of the highlights of June for the Grade 4s of Charterhouse Preparatory School was their educational day outing to Maropeng , the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.

“Our children were fascinated to learn about our ancestors that have lived in that area for more than 3 million years. The children discovered that ‘Maropeng’ means ‘returning to the place of origin’ in Setswana, and this is just how our children felt when they arrived at Maropeng,” said the grade leader for Grade 4, Tessa Venter.

The pupils had many adventures on an educational journey of discovery, as they looked at the geological time prior to humans and our path leading to humanity. The children explored various science zones, the wall of sustainability, original fossils and an underground boat ride which took them through the various elements on Earth. “Much laughter and a few nervous shrills of excitement could be heard as a result of this ride,” Venter added.

The pupils were also introduced and intrigued to learn about Mrs Ples and Little Foot, the resident members of Maropeng, both found in the Sterkfontein Caves. “A wonderful day, full of fun and learning, was had by all,” said Venter.
