The flip side of speeding

The driver of a Toyota Conquest saw the flip side of speeding on Sunday night.

The Record has obtained access to CCTV footage showing how the car came speeding down General Pienaar Avenue in a southerly direction. The driver lost control of his car and crashed into a lamp-post’s anchor cable on the opposite side of the road. The impact caused the car to flip over, onto its roof.

Resident Johan Northam rushed to assist the driver, but he was already climbing out through the back window of his car. “I asked him if he was okay, and he confirmed that he was fine. He said he was reaching for something lying on the floor of the passenger side of the car, and lost control. There were no other vehicles involved.”

According to Northam, the driver urgently wanted to leave the scene, but an off-duty police officer stopped him. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital while Help24 turned the car back onto its wheels and towed it away.

Northam said City Power arrived at about 3am to repair the electricity cables.
