Bikers’ organise mass prayer run

Revving their iron horses, bikers from all over the city of Johannesburg made their way to a Prayer Run in Parktown last weekend.

The event, which doubled as a road safety campaign, saw a Road Safety presentation and an address by an official from the Department of Community Safety. There was also a praise and worship session for all the bikers.

The event was held because of the recent increase in motorbike-related accidents. West Rand Biker Association’s Rod McBride (from the West Side Riders Motorcycle Club), and Johan van Eck (from the Dead Men Riding Motorcycle Club), worked with Honda Auto Westrand to arrange the function. The bikers gathered at the dealership last Saturday morning before heading out to the prayer meeting.

Honda spokesperson Paul Jacobs was happy to work with the motorcycle clubs to promote unity and biker safety in the community. “We care for the community and have been involved in a number of local charities such as the Kirsty Watts Foundation. We want to be of assistance to the community where we can. Another of Honda’s passions is to support young bikers from disadvantaged backgrounds who want to learn the sport by teaching them how to compete in MX competitions,” he said.

Rod’s aim is to change the community’s negative perception of bike riders and help spread a positive message. “We want to raise awareness and do what we can to help spread the message of biker safety. We need to promote safe riding and this initiative has received positive feedback nationwide,” he said.

Earlier this year, the clubs participated in the Ubuntu Run which traversed countries such as Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. “With racial tensions on the increase in the country, the aim of this ride was to show that motorcycle enthusiasts get together because they share a passion. That passion unites us as equals – and the nation should be united,” he concluded.
