UPDATE: Triple murder bail hearing postponed

A teenage will appear in the Roodepoort Regional Court in connection with the murder of Hanle Lategan.

The bail hearing of Marcelle Steyn and her brother Le Roux Steyn has been postponed to 30 June. The siblings, together with two others, Christiaan Kruger and Fabian Luff, have been charged with the murder of Ruimsig Real Estate agent, Hanle Lategan, and two others in the Krugersdorp area, earlier this year.

Update, 27 June 10.10am

Reports coming out of court suggest that the vehicle carrying the suspects to court has broken down, causing a delay in proceedings.

The suspects have been moved into two other vehicles and are now heading to the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court, where they will appear before Reagional Magistrate Delize Smith.

Initial report, 27 June 7.14am

A teenage girl who was taken into custody with a 20-year-old man on Friday, will appear in the Roodepoort Regional Court today in connection with the notorious ‘appointment murders’ in Krugersdorp.

They will apply for bail with Christiaan Kruger (29) and Fabian Luff (32) who briefly appeared in the same court last Friday in connection with the three murders that left the West Rand community reeling with shock.

The three victims were murdered in three separate incidents after they had 6pm appointments with a client. Money was withdrawn from their accounts after they went missing. The bodies of insurance brokers Anthony Scolefield and Kevin McAlpine were found in the boots of their cars, wrapped in plastic. Ruimsig estate agent, Hanle Lategan was found near a stream in the Randfontein area.

State prosecutor, Advocate Jackie Steyn asked for a postponement last Friday so that the bail application of all four accused could be heard today.

She informed the court that two more suspects had been apprehended in the early morning hours of Friday. She added that the police informed them that there was more evidence that the court needs to be aware of. “It is in the interest of all the accused  and the court that all the relevant information should be made available to the court,” said Steyn.

Kruger’s lawyer Victor da Silva opposed the postponement.

Regional Magistrate Delize Smith granted the postponement and said it is in the interest of justice that all information should be available to the court, ‘especially because all four accused will stand trial on the same charges’.
